Sooji Appe (Paniyaram)

Today’s post, is another healthy breakfast recipe.  “Appe” as we Chitrapur Saraswat’s call it, is a great snack not just for breakfast but even during your evening tea time.   It’s a south Indian delicacy and who doesn’t love South Indian delicacies. These can be made in a jiffy. And before you know, they will be gone in a seconds.  Let’s begin with recipe shall we.
INGREDIENTS:
1 katori   -   urad dal (100gms)
1 katori   -   sooji (85 gms)
3/4 tsp    -   salt (or as per taste)
Handful of poha (beaten rice)
Water to grind

METHOD:
1.       Wash the urad dal well a couple of times.
2.       Soak urad dal for 4 hours.
3.       Add the poha after about an hour or two.
4.    Grind the dal and poha by adding water little at a time (the soaked water can be used for grinding).
5.      The batter should be neither too thick nor too thin.

6.      Once ground, transfer into a vessel and add sooji.  Mix well. Add salt.
7.     Leave this batter to ferment for a good 8 to 10 hours.
8.     Heat the appe kadai (pan) on a medium flame, brush it with a little oil and pour the batter with a spoon.  This will rise so do not over-fill it. Drop a little oil from the side of the appe (paniyaram)

9.      After about 2-3 mins turn over and let it cook on the other side for another 2 mins.
10.   Serve them hot with the chutney of your choice.

TIPS:
1.       I used a non-stick pan, so did not use much oil.
2.       It’s not only healthy but less oily too.
3.      I served it with red chutney, and can I tell you, the combination works really well.

Will post the recipe for the chutney soon
